The goal of Emmanuel Called Society is:
Is to form disciples that love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and that love each other just as Jesus loved us (Matt 22:37-40, Jn 13:34-35). Who will lead the way in laying down our lives for others and emphasize the need for every disciple to be a committed servant in the body of Christ (1 Jn 3:16, Mk 10:43-45). Who will reach out within their community and share their faith, so that through them, God can make disciples of others (Matt 28:18-20) and bring them into a loving, serving and maturing part of the body of Christ (Eph 4:11-16).
COMPONENTS OF AN EFFECTIVE GROUP: Acts 2:42
- Study of the apostles teaching which includes:
A.WORSHIP - The primary function of the family of God is to be a worshiping community in attitude and lifestyle (Matt 4:10, Jn 4:23-24, Rom 12:1-2). In your worship time, you should seek to experience the presence of God as you express honor, gratitude, awe, humility and brokenness before Him.
B.DISCIPLING - the goal is not only to lead people into Christ (Acts 2:38, Eph 4:1-7) but to growing, training and equipping other disciples for kingdom-life (Eph 4:11-16). The group should recognize the biblical mandate to help each other grow. To accept accountability, seeking, giving biblical advice and/or counsel and corporate prayer and intercessions with one another.
C.HOLINESS - God desires us to come out and be separate so we can show the world His holiness (Lev 11:45, 1 Th 4:7). We believe holiness is bigger than just avoiding sin & should focus on developing a taste and passion for God and a hunger for righteousness through His grace. Jesus must be the Lord of our lives in all circumstances needs to be empahsized.
- Fellowship which includes:
A.FAMILY - As a family of God there must be a common faith, common bond and a common love for God and each other. The commitment is to love, forgive and bear each other's burdens and weaknesses within the group (Rom 12, 1 Cor 12, Gal 5:13-26).
B.SERVING - Jesus' goal in life was to give up his life for others (Jn 12:24-26). Each must pray how God is leading them to serve each another. The willingness to give up time, talent and money to bless each other- is deeply rooted in OT and NT themes.
- The breaking of the bread which includes:
The descriptive language "break bread" was obviously a common meal (see Acts 27: 35). "Breaking bread as used in Acts 2: 46 is clearly a common meal. They broke bread "from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart." Therefore, your group can participate in a meal together after studying the Word of God. A good rule, then, is if "breaking of bread" is found in the environment of a meal, that is its meaning. If someone in your group is able to do, "breaking of bread in verse 42 in the atmosphere of worship, as such, the expression is used in the setting of worship or the Lord's Supper, then "breaking of bread" refers to the memorial of the Lord's death.
- Evangelism which includes
It is a command to testify to the world that Jesus is our Lord and Savior (1 Pet 2:9-10; 1 Pet 3:15). Evangelism should be personal and natural for each member of the group. We have made some suggestions but God can lead you into creative evangelism for the type of block you reside at.
BENEVOLENCE - there must be a commitment to making a difference in our world around us. Jesus taught that his followers to be givers not only takers (Matt 5:13-16). We want to be kind to our neighbors through any help we can extend to them, specifically to those that need it most. You can also think of fundraising activities for your group. ECS can suggest some and you can participate if God leads you.
- Prayers. These types of prayers, should probably be understood as representing all types of prayers, should be made “for all men,” specifically those in authority (I Timothy 4:2) and for the unsaved (v.4). Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will present our prayers to the Father (v.5) and insure that He will answer them as He sees best Therefore, t he group must expand prayer to eternal issues, lifting our eyes above our own needs to the needs of a lost world! Once a month, members must adopt their own block to pray for focusing on families, neighborhoods, cities, churches, schools, seat of government, financial districts and others focusing first in their salvation and eventually their transformation in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Likewise they can pray for wherever they are working or doing business at- their employer, staff. co-workers, including people that they are serving. If given an opportunity, these kinds of prayers needs to be coupled with evangelism. Eventually, invite those have been saved to join your group so they too will become disciples of Christ as well.
